Kibabii University Wins Competitive NRF Infrastructure Grant for ICT Funding

Kibabii University is situated in Bungoma County along Bungoma – Chwele road. It was awarded Charter on 14th November 2015 thus becoming the 23rd Public University in Kenya. The Vision of the University is to be a global and dynamic University of excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation. The University has Three (3) Schools and Two (2) Faculties namely; School of Computing and Informatics, School of Business and Economics, School of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Education and Social Sciences and Faculty of Science. The University offers ten (10) Doctorate, fifteen (15) Masters, nineteen (19) undergraduate Degree Programs and one (1) Postgraduate Diploma. The University continues to make its presence felt locally, regionally and globally, under the exemplary leadership of the Chancellor, University Council, and the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo. In January 2019, the University was ranked No.14 by Webo-metrics amongst the Public and Private Universities in Kenya. The University is ISO 9001:2015 certified and is committed to offer high quality teaching, training, research, consultancy, innovation and extension services to all stakeholders.

Kibabii University won a competitive Infrastructure Grant amounting to KES 64.6M funded by the National Research Fund (NRF). This was after an open Call by the NRF in 2016 for Infrastructure Grant to all Research and Institutions of higher learning in Kenya. The Project Coordinator, Prof. Franklin Wabwoba, led a team of researchers from the School of Computing & Informatics (Dr. Samuel Mbuguah, Dr. Betty Mayeku, Ms. Dorcus Arshley Shisoka, Mr. Humphrey Juma Kilwake, Mr. Patrick Owoche, Mr. Samwel Barasa, Mr. Yonah Etene and Mr. Daniel Khaoya Muyobo) to respond to the Call by the NRF. The University made an application to establish Kibabii University Information Communication and Technology Hub (KICTH). The grant from NRF marks an important and monumental occasion when the University through the School of Computing and Informatics (SCAI) makes yet milestone that clearly shows that it is fulfilling its core mandate of producing graduates who meet the demands of society, the region and beyond. The NRF Grant will be used to facilitate setting up an ultra-modern equipped computing training hub of its own kind in the region and Sub-Sahara Africa. The main hub will comprise a Data Centre for high end Computing, Mobile Computing laboratory, Digital Computing Forensics laboratory, Networking laboratory, Digital learning – video conferencing Centre and an Incubation hub. Through KITCH, the University will produce skilled computing manpower and go a long way in capacity building towards realising, the “Big Four” Agenda, Vision 2030 and the Africa Agenda 2063.

Kibabii University is among the few Universities in Kenya accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) to offer Doctor of Philosophy in Information Technology. In this regard, the University will continue to produce graduates at Doctorate, Masters, Bachelors, Diploma and Certificate levels, who are equipped with both hard and soft skills that meet societal demands, and suited to transfer skills and creation of employment in realizing sustainable development. KIBU Strategic Plan Review Team retreated to Eldoret town on 7th -8th Feb 2019 to sensitize University Management Board (UBM) on the revised KIBU Strategic Plan 2016-2020.  The write shop saw great improvements on the document among them being the incorporation of Government’s Big Four Agenda in the various strategic directions throughout the plan’s shelve life. The plan implementation currently stands shy of Kshs 8 billion which if achieved will transform KIBU into a world class premier university in the region

Evaluation and Moderation of the 14th Cycle Performance Contracting for 2017/2018 Financial Year took place on 6th December, 2018 in VC’s Boardroom A where Independent External Experts and Technical Experts in the Public Service Performance Management Unit in the Executive Office of the President did the evaluation. Kibabii University had a composite score of 2.8671 which implied VERY GOOD as per evaluators’ evaluation.

Some of the indicators that the University scored excellently included:

  • Promotion of local content in procurement
  • Student enrollment in Science based programmes

Kibabii University Celebrate 3rd Graduation Ceremony

Kibabii University held its 3rd Graduation Ceremony on 23rd November, 2018 at the Graduation Square. The colorful ceremony was presided over by Ambassador (Dr.) Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education on behalf of the Chancellor, H.E. Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta.

1704 graduands were awarded with doctorates, degrees, diplomas and certificates in various fields; Doctorates 6, Masters 26, Bachelors 1314, Diplomas 302 and Certificates 56.

Ms. Lucy Boyani, the excellent academic performer of 2018 class made a valedictory speech.

The Council Chairman of Kibabii University, Dr. Ernest Njoroge challenged the graduands to go out of Kibabii University with confidence and utilize what has been imparted on them. “We don’t want you to be bystanders mesmerized by the scintillating colors of day break. Step out and make your positive mark on the emerging global landscape.”

Amb. (Dr.) Amina Mohamed applauded the class of 2018 for their sterling performance and urged them to courageously embrace the challenges of the world they are stepping in with passion to make it a better place. “Step forward and find your foothold in shaping the new world.”

During the ceremony ISO 9001: 2015 certification was launched.

Graduands were seated under a white tent that stretched about 100 meters away. Inside the tent two large screens were mounted for graduands to follow the ceremony keenly. Thanks to technology graduates captured their last moments in campus along with their families.

The ceremony was also attended by Bungoma Governor, H.E. Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati among others

Education Workshop for the 21st Century Learning

Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FESS) held a successful two days Education Workshop on 23rd – 24th October, 2018 in Auditorium C. The workshop was declared opened by DVC (Academics and Students Affairs), Prof S. Shibairo. In attendance was DVC Administration, Finance and Development, Prof. Aywa. The theme of the workshop was “Enhancing Learning Outcomes through Application of 21st Century Pedagogies in the Provision of University Education and Embracing the New Competence Based Curriculum in Kenya”.

Keynote speakers made presentations of the various topics on Education for the twenty-first century:

  1. Patrick A. Kafu of Moi University handled topics on: The Teacher in the 21st Century, Essentials for Effective Instruction and Learner Engagement in Instruction
  2. Lydia Kataka of KICD handled a topic on : The Competence Based Curriculum its Implications to University Education
  3. Dorothy Mwanzile of KICD handled a topic on : Value systems in Higher Education
  4. Edward Misava Ombajo of Aga Khan University handled topics on : Integrating Emerging Technologies in Instruction, Digital Learning the Promise and Challenges in Kenyan Universities and Digitization of the Curriculum

In closing the workshop, Dean School of Computing & Informatics (SCAI), Prof. Wabwoba thanked Dean, Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FESS), Dr. Wepukhulu for organizing such an informative forum.

In his keynote orientation address themed “Sailing or Drifting through SchoolProf. Odeo called on the new first year students to sail through Kibabii University not to drift.

ISMS KIBU Staff Awareness Training

Kibabii University staff undertook an Information Security Management System (ISMS) ISO 27001:2013 awareness training  inline with the KIBU Strategic Goals on 5th -7th September, 2018 in VC’s Boardroom and Senate Boardroom.

The training took place after the Gap Analysis had been done by Millennium Management Consultant Limited (MMCL)

Directorate of AIDS Control Unit Certification by National AIDS Control Council

During the 15th cycle Performance Contracting review meeting the Directorate of AIDS Control Unit was awarded Certificate by National AIDS Control Council (NACC) for having successfully achieved the HIV and AIDS performance contract targets. The Vice Chancellor Prof. Ipara received the certificate on behalf of the University and directorate.

Professor Rodriguez from the University of Kwazulu – Natal, South Africa (Department of Mathematics) delivered a keynote presentation on “A model for detecting corrupt agents in organizations” on Wednesday 4th July, 2018 at the Kibabii University Senate Boardroom. He later held consultative forum for staff and post graduates students on research project and thesis formulations in Room ABC 115 on Friday July 6th, 2018.

Kibabii University Training on Mobilization and Awareness Creation on the Upcoming EU’s Funding Schemes on Horizon 2020

The Ministry of Education State Department for University Education scheduled for one day training at Kibabii University on mobilization and awareness creation on the upcoming EU’s funding schemes on Horizon 2020 and ERA-NET co-funded calls for proposals. Horizon 20202 has three pillars: Excellence Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges. Horizon calls will cover six societal challenges namely:

  • Healthy
  • Food security and Agriculture
  • Energy
  • Transport
  • Environment
  • Inclusive and reflective societies and secure societies
