TICAH Sensitizes Kibabii University Students on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence

On 3rd September 2024, the Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health (TICAH) visited Kibabii University raise awareness on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and youth sexual reproductive health. This interactive workshop addressed three pivotal areas: healthy relationships on campus, the principles of consent, and managing peer pressure.

Ms. Corazon Ayoma, a representative from TICAH, facilitated the session on healthy relationships. She highlighted the significance of respect, open communication, and mutual understanding in fostering supportive relationships among students. Ms. Ayoma stressed that building connections that promote personal growth and emotional well-being is crucial for a positive campus experience.

Ms. Catherine Wanjiku, also from TICAH, delved into the concept of consent, defining it as a clear, enthusiastic, and ongoing agreement between individuals in any interaction. She educated the students on the vital importance of recognizing and respecting personal boundaries, noting that consent can be withdrawn at any time.

Kibabii University’s Director of the Institute of Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) Dr. Rispah Wepukhulu, addressed the impact of peer pressure on young adults. She emphasized the importance of setting personal boundaries, acknowledging that peer pressure is a common challenge in campus life and can have detrimental effects. Dr. Wepukhulu offered practical advice on resisting negative influences, making independent decisions, and encouraged students to seek support from friends, mentors, or counselors when feeling overwhelmed by peer expectations.

In a gesture of generosity and commitment to student well-being, TICAH’s representatives from the Adolescent and Youth Sexual Reproductive Health department donated sanitary towels to the IGDS to support students in need, an initiative aimed to ensure that no student is disadvantaged due to a lack of essential hygiene products. Furthermore, TICAH provided a toll-free number for students seeking psychosocial support, reinforcing their dedication to promoting mental health and overall well-being.

TICAH’s visit to Kibabii University was not only informative but also empowering, equipping students with the knowledge and resources necessary to navigate campus life safely and confidently. The IGDS, on behalf of the entire University community, expressed deep gratitude to TICAH for their unwavering commitment to creating a safer and more supportive environment for all students.
