KIBU Commits to Enriching the community through enhanced Food Security Programmes

In an effort to empower the local community members, and as part of the University’s Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance, the University through Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences and the Community Outreach Committee successfully conducted a one day Farmers’ Field Day at Namikelo in Kanduyi Sub-County on Thursday 6th July, 2023. The programme, spearheaded by Dr. Keffa Nyende was the second of its kind since the launch in 2022. It will be an annual event. Under this initiative, farmers are brought together and offered seedlings and other farm inputs that are then planted in one demonstration farm within the community. They are then taught on the best farming practices by Agriculture experts from the University as well as experts from the industry. The event attracted a number of partners from both the public and private sector, all inclined towards food security. The organizations included Murphy Chemicals Ltd., CIAT Ltd., Western Square Ltd., Altvetis Ltd., Kenya Seed Co. Ltd, County and Sub-County Agricultural Offices among others. This was a unique occasion where local farmers and the Scholars from the University shared ideas and experiences on emerging agricultural trends. The exercise presented an opportunity to farmers to understand how they could contribute and support the Government’s Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA) especially the Pillar on Agricultural Transformation for maximum livelihood of the community.
