Mixed Results as KIBU Taekwondo Tours Kigali, Rwanda

Kibabii University Taekwondo Team joined the National Team in the The African Championship (G2) held in Kigali, Rwanda between 13th and 17th July 2022.

The team included six (6) athletes, four (4) being continuing students (Jully Musangi, Edina Sichangi, Stephen Odhiambo, and Evelyn Aluoch) and three (3) Alumni (Faith Ogallo, Innocent Wafula, and Elizabeth Mukhebi).

The African Championship is a Continental Championship brings together African teams and is the second highest ranked event in Africa after the All-African Games.

In day one duel played on 17th July 2022, Jully Musangi won her preliminary matches against Ghananian Max-Voy Marrianne but lost to Ruth Marie Christelle Gbagbi of the Ivory Coast. The Ivorian was the under 67 kg event Champion at the 2012 Summer Olympics, the 2016 Summer Olympics, and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. She is also the Gold Medalist in the 2022 Olympic games.

In another match, Faith Ogallo won bronze after losing to another Gold Medalist and winner of the 12th All African Games held in Rabat, Morocco on 2019.

In the second day, Evelyn Aluoch, a Master of Education student won a Bronze Medal after losing to Gold Medalist Farouk Maisoun of Egypt. Edina Sichangi lost to another Gold Medalist Sahib Soukaina of Morocco in the Quarter finals as Stephen Odhiambo, a Bachelor of Criminology student lost to a Senegalese in the preliminary match. An alumnus Innocent Wafula lost to gold medalist Elasbi Soufiane from Morocco in the quarter-finals.

Overally, the Kibabii University team managed to win for Kenya two (2) out of the three (3) Bronze medals collected in the championship.
