Kibabii University had the privilege of hosting visitors from the USA who had brought donations towards the establishment of lacrosse sport in Kibabii University. The delegation which had been drawn from Liberty University and a host of High Schools constituted of lacrosse coaches and players from the State of Virginia.
Lacrosse a contact sport that involves the use of a lacrosse stick and lacrosse ball is a new game in Kenya and the continent yet interestingly one of the oldest sports in the world featuring in the 1904 and 1908 Olympics. A sport that has roots in North America, the revival of lacrosse as a competitive sport around the world saw Kibabii University benefitting as one of the first institutions in Kenya to adopt it during the 2023 Kibabii University International Sports Symposium.
Speaking during the presentation of the donations the Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Makokha Wanjala thanked the sponsors and acknowledged the importance of sports in the holistic development of a university student. Prof. Makokha also thanked them for choosing Kibabii University as their preferred destination for the growth of the sport in the country. The Director of the Center for Creative, Performing Arts and Sports (CECPAS) on his part thanked the team from the USA for their immense support they have been offering to Kibabii University since the sport was introduced in the University in 2023. Dr. Edwin Masibo noted that this was the second of such a donation the sport was receiving after a donation of sports equipment worth over 1.5 Million was delivered last year by the same group during the sports symposium. He promised that the equipment and sporting gears that the Kibabii team has received so far is sufficient to enable them push for local and international spaces in lacrosse.
The head of the delegation Coach Ryan Arist thanked Kibabii University for taking an interest in lacrosse and putting up mechanisms to ensure that the University team receives the necessary support to allow them engage in competitive events. As distinguished coach with over 20 years in coaching lacrosse, he expressed his satisfaction at the strides the University was making in taking the sport to the hearts of the students’ population and also making it one of the competitive sports available for sportsmen and women to engage in. He hoped to see the University taking lacrosse players to competitive global sporting events including the Olympic.
