The Institute of Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) at Kibabii University commemorated the International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2024 to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about gender equality, and promote inclusivity. The theme of the event, “Inspire Inclusion,” echoed the global call to action, while the slogan “Invest in women: Accelerate Progress” underscored the importance of empowering women for societal advancement.
Dr. Wepukhulu, the IGDS Director thanked the Kibabii University Management for its continued support in facilitating gender activities at the institution. She illuminated the imperative for fostering solidarity among women, stressing the significance of mutual support and collaboration within the female community. Dr. Wepukhulu’s presentation laid a solid foundation for the ensuing discussions and activities of the commemoration, setting the tone for a thoughtful and impactful exploration of gender-related issues and empowerment initiatives.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Finance, and Development, Prof. Donald Siamba explained the detrimental ramifications stemming from the exclusion of women in national development endeavors. He emphasized the need to adopt inclusive policies and practices as indispensable prerequisites for fostering sustainable progress. Dr. Ben Nyongesa, in his capacity as the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Students Affairs, delivered an address focusing on the indispensable role of women in nurturing responsible citizens.
Professor Muganda Munir, representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, extended a cordial welcome to all attendees and presided over the official opening of the event. In his address, he underscored the undeniable necessity for women’s empowerment, characterizing it as a pivotal catalyst for the advancement of the nation.
The guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Joslyne Isigi, shed light on several crucial aspects pertaining to women’s empowerment and solidarity. She stressed the paramount importance of women supporting each other. Dr. Isigi further emphasized that by fostering solidarity and standing together, women can amplify their voices and effect meaningful change, making the event a resounding success.
