KIBU Awarded as the World Marks Blood Donor Day

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is held on June 14 each year. The event was organized for the first time in 2005, by a joint initiative of the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. In Kenya, this year’s celebrations were Nationally held at Uhuru Park Nairobi, and in every County across the Country. In Bungoma, the celebrations were held at Webuye County Hospital. The event which was graced by the Chief Guest, Her Excellency the First Lady of Bungoma County Ms. Carolyne Wangamati was organized to appreciate institutions, organizations, CBOs, FBOs and individuals who volunteered to donate blood. Kibabii University was represented by the Senior Assistant Dean of Students Mr. Nasongo Benson Murumba. Over the years, Kibabii University has been the leading donor in the category of Institutions. This year, in a blood donation drive held on 11^th June 2021, the University community donated a total of 72 Units of Blood. In recognition of this exemplary gesture, the University was awarded a Trophy and a Certificate for being the leading contributor of blood in Bungoma County. The Chief guest was full of praise for the University and urged all stakeholders to keep up. It was resolved that moving forward, the event will be held on a quarterly basis in the County to raise enough blood to support the recipients whose numbers are ever-increasing.
