Kibabii University secured qualification for the East Africa University Games following an impressive performance at the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) National Soccer Championships held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa between 28th and 30th March 2026.
The University team delivered a dominant campaign en route to the final, beginning with a flawless run in the group stage. Kibabii University opened with a commanding 3–0 victory over Garissa University, before registering a 2–0 win against Machakos University. They maintained their momentum with another 2–0 triumph over Tharaka University, advancing to the knockout rounds without conceding a goal.
In the quarterfinals, KIBU continued their strong form, defeating Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology (DeKUT) 2–0. The semi-final clash against KCA University saw the team display tactical discipline and attacking prowess, securing a 2–0 victory to book a place in the final.
The championship match against Kenyatta University proved highly competitive, with both sides settling for a 1–1 draw at full time. The title was ultimately decided through a penalty shootout, where Kenyatta University edged Kibabii University 4–2.
Despite the narrow loss, Kibabii University’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned them qualification for the upcoming East Africa University Games. The team’s efforts were further recognized, with striker Meshack Wanjala being named the Most Valuable Player and receiving an award from the Erick Marcelo Ouma Foundation.
According to the Head of Games and Sports, Mr. Cyprian Lusweti, the team has now shifted its focus to preparations for the East Africa University Games, scheduled to take place in Dodoma, Tanzania, in November 2026. Team Manager Mr. Davis Jumba expressed confidence in improved performance, noting that the team is determined to deliver even better results in Dodoma.
