Kibabii University Hosts the 1st Innovation Competition, Champions Skills, Innovation, and the Future of Work

Kibabii University hosted the Inaugural Innovation Competition on 1st and 2nd April 2026, bringing together students and members of staff to showcase transformative ideas aimed at addressing real-world challenges. Under the theme: “From Ideas to Impact: Skills, Innovation, and the Future of Work” the event attracted 33 entries, including participants from the University of Eldoret, reflecting its regional appeal.

The competition was officially opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation), Prof. Julius Maiyo. In his address, he emphasized the need to embrace change driven by Artificial Intelligence and encouraged cross-border collaborations. He further underscored the importance of community outreach in disseminating innovations and challenged participants to turn societal challenges into opportunities.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Fredrick Omukubi Otswong’o, an adjunct lecturer at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), where he supports technology transfer initiatives. He spoke on “Intellectual Property Management and the Critical Process of Transforming Research into Commercialization,” highlighting the importance of protecting and managing intellectual property as a pathway to innovation uptake.

Another presentation was made by Mr. Francis Okwara, a Senior Innovation Officer at the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA). He spoke on “The Transformative Role of Innovation in Tackling Pressing Societal Challenges,” emphasizing the role of innovation in driving sustainable development.

The two day event culminated into awards to winners in the closing ceremony held on Thursday 2nd April, 2026.
