Inaugural Ken Walibora Public Lecture

Title: Safari Ya Kiswahili Ya Ken Walibora

The Kibabii University’s Center for Languages and Cultural Studies wishes to inform the general public that the title for the Inaugural Ken Walibora Public Lecture that will be held on 9th April 2024 will be Safari ya Kiswahili ya Ken Walibora.

The Inaugural Ken Walibora Public Lecture is a remembrance of a distinguished scholar, writer and media personality. The event which will be held in the University Auditorium C starting from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will bring together scholars, students and lovers of Kiswahili to reflect on the outstanding works of the late Ken Walibora.

The Chief Speaker, Prof. F.E.M.K. Senkoro, Professor Emeritus of Kiswahili, University of Dar es Salaam will make a presentation themed Safari ya Kiswahili ya Ken Walibora. In choosing the theme, Prof. Senkoro who holds dear the works of Ken Walibora, noted that there couldn’t be a better theme to walk the journey that was taken by Ken Walibora.

Prof. Senkoro was born in Gonja, Pare District. He attended primary school in his home District at Mtii Extended Primary School. For his secondary education, he went to Tabora Boys’ Secondary School for ordinary-level and Mkwawa High School for advanced-level. He holds a B.A. (Hons), M.A. in Kiswahili and PhD in Kiswahili from the University of Dar es Salaam. He also possess a M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta, Canada.

Professor Senkoro is a distinguished scholar with almost 50 years of teaching in the University and over 112 written works which include 58 books and journal articles, as well as 64 papers. He has also served as an Executive Committee Member of Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA).

Other invited guests to this Public Lecture include Prof. Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha (Chairman, Commission of University Education), Prof. Nathan Ogechi (Vice Chancellor Kisii University), Prof. Inyani Simala (former Executive Secretary, East African Kiswahili Commission), Prof. Iribe Mwangi (Chairman Department of Kiswahili, University of Nairobi), and Prof. Clara Momanyi (Professor of Kiswahili) among many others.
