History of Directorate of ICT

Kibabii University (KIBU) was established by The Kibabii University legal notice No. 115 of 2011. KIBU is located in Bungoma county in Western Kenya. The first group officer left Masinde Muliro University of science and technology on 10 th March 2012. The team comprised a coordinator who was later competitively appointed the principal, two deans ( FESS and FS) and two Chair of Department (FESS and FS). The COD Maths and computer science was incharge of computer science and information technology and default was incharge of ICT aspect in University.

The COD was involved in the purchase of ICT equipment in university, the developed of the ICT infrastructure and the university of website. He initiated communication with KENET for the connection of the University to WAN. One technician was hired to man the computer lab and handle any emerging ICT issues. In July 2013 more staff were recruited in faculty of science including the recruitment of a system administrator. More equipment was also purchased. The school of computing & informatics (SCAI) was hived from the faculty of science which later gave birth to the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology.

A director was appointed from amongst the lecturers in SCAI and seconded to the directorate in acting capacity. The directorate also started with only a system administrator. Two Network administrators were later recruited and further staff recruitment is on going.

The University is part of WAN, with several staff members being connected to net through structured cabling. While students and other staff are now connected through WIFI. All staff members and student have University emails.
