KIBU Participates In the National Elimu Tree Planting Day

Following a directive by the Ministry of Education that the 24th of May, 2024 be marked as a tree planting day for stakeholders in the University sector, Kibabii University marked the day by planting more than 300 trees at the Institution. Twenty seven (27) pupils from St. Mary’s Kibabii Girls Boarding Primary School and twenty (25) pupils from Kibabii Boys’ Primary School joined the Kibabii University fraternity in planting trees at designated spots in the University.

The tree-planting exercise was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo. Speaking during the exercise, Prof. Odeo said that Kibabii University is proud to be part of the Elimu Tree Planting Day, a new initiative aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainability among students. He further noted that the event underscored the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its role in addressing climate change. “We are excited to launch the Elimu Tree Planting Day at Kibabii University, which represents our dedication to environmental sustainability. By planting trees, we are not only contributing to a greener planet but also teaching our students and community members the value of environmental stewardship.” said Prof. Ipara.

Others present were Prof. Donald Siamba, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC), Administration, Finance and Development, Dr. Ben Nyongesa, Ag. DVC, Academic and Students Affairs, Dr. Tom Ekisa, the Chair of the Environmental Management Mainstreaming Committee, Dr. Kefa Nyende from the Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences Department, and Dr. Charles Wasike, In-charge of Administration among others.

The pupils were encouraged to take up the role of planting trees and conserving the environment since they are young and have quite a lot of time ahead of them to nurture and take care of the planted trees. This initiative not only aims to enhance the green cover in Kenya, but also seeks to instill a culture of environmental responsibility among the pupils and students.

Kibabii University also donated trees to all the pupils who participated in the activity to be planted at their respective schools.
