Video: Donation of Soap and Sanitizers to Bungoma County Government

Governor Wangamati salutes Kibabii University on their research and contribution towards fighting Covid-19. The University donated own-made soap and sanitizers to the County in a bid to ensure as many people as possible wash their hands as part of the efforts to check the spread of Covid-19.

Donation of Soap and Sanitizers to Bungoma County Government

Donation of Soap and Sanitizers to Bungoma County GovernmentKibabii as an institution is at an advantage not only because of its capacity in both  knowledge and facilities, but applicable knowledge in all the disciplines in the institution, KIBU has structures in place that can harness knowledge and apply it during this trying times.

To prevent the spread of Covid-19 the World Health Organizations has urged us to follow the  following guidelines : maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing; don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth; cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze; Stay home if you feel unwell; If you have a fever, a cough, and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention; Follow the directions of your local health authority and most importantly clean your hands often using soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.

One of the vital products that have been advocated is the use of soap. Soap is a universal product that is used by everyone. Production of liquid soap is done using a simple method in the University’s labs and can be availed to the rural areas in the county, on the other hand sanitizers can be used in offices, business premises and also by individuals. With that in mind KIBU initiated the production of soap for the university’s use and the community around it can also benefit. Prof. Siamba, (Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor –Administration, Finance and Development) expounded on how other disciplines not necessarily science are working on  tasks that they can do to help in the containment of this disease. “Our staff are working from home literary but as they are working from home, we have requested them to pass the correct information about Covid-19. As there is a lot of fake news circulation in the social media and a lot of uncertainties on this pandemic.  They can demystify the issues surrounding this pandemic either in group basis or as individual’s by giving the right information to the communities that surrounds them.”

KIBU fraternity has come together in the spirit of corporate social responsibility to support the community as seen by UASU Kibabii University Chapter. UASU reached out to the communities around the University on 24th April, 2020 and donated sanitizers, 100 litre jericans and masks locally made and donated by staff. Beneficiaries of the donations included essential service providers: tuktuk and bodaboda drivers, market vendors in Mayanja, Bungoma taxi stage and the University security department.

KIBU has harnessed the expertise from the chemistry department. Dr. Makokha John Wanjala (Chairman, Department Of Science, and Technology & Engineering) expressed gratitude towards the University management for supporting the department in accomplishing this task. The department has followed guidelines given by World Health Organization concerning production of sanitizers and the liquid soap. The produced sanitizers include 70% alcohol content and the department has done a micro-biological test on its ability to manage the bacteria infestation in the labs and they realised that it cleared all bacteria available in the lab. Therefore proving that it’s effective in its intended purpose.
Donation of Soap and Sanitizers to Bungoma County Government
Prof. Isaac Ipara (Vice Chancellor) expressed a deep concern on the effects of this pandemic, he stated that this pandemic affects every aspect of our lives and it’s important to explore a model where the county government and the university can try to reach out to communities near and far. Initially KIBU wanted to make sanitizers and soap that will be enough for the institution and the community around the university. But in the long run KIBU is looking forward to continue with production of these and other products as an income generating activity, that will help the institution reduce the cost of procurement from the market which is expensive and also generate additional income for the University. We don’t know for how long this pandemic will with us. Washing hands has become a standard procedure therefore we need cheaper products to enable us during this process.

Issues of social stigma associated with COVID-19 are also with us, based on three main factors: first is the fact that it’s a disease that’s new and for which there are still many unknowns; secondly, it is understandable that there is confusion, anxiety, and fear among the public. Unfortunately Stigma can undermine social cohesion and prompt possible social isolation of groups, which might contribute to a situation where the virus is more likely to spread. This can result in more severe health problems and difficulties controlling a disease outbreak. Stigma can drive people to hide the illness to avoid discrimination and prevent people from seeking health care immediately. KIBU  has a team of counsellors who can take up the task when needed. KIBU has trained medical personnel who can also participate in the mass testing in the event that the county will need our support.

Profesa Ken Walibora Alikuwa Mtu Spesheli Asema Profesa Isaac Ipara Odeo

Kibabii University Council and Management at Kenya School of GovernmentManagers have, since time immemorial, been regarded as an honored set of individuals who provide leadership, vision, direction and indeed crystalize the collective aspirations of organizations. It is against this backdrop that the University organized a three day Corporate Governance course for University Council and Management at Kenya School of Government (KSG), Nairobi which was successfully held from 24th – 26th February, 2020.

The Chairman of Council, in his opening remarks noted that top organizations have common characteristics which include strong leadership and efficient governance processes. Kibabii University Visits Kopsiro in Mt. Elgon

Kibabii University Visits Kopsiro in Mt. ElgonKibabii University Management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ipara Odeo visited Kopsiro division headquarter for a Consultative meeting with the Government officers led by the Deputy County Commissioner, Cheptais Sub-County, Mr. Wesley Koech, OGW, County Government of Bungoma officers led by the County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Urban Development and Physical Planning, Mr. Bramwel Murgor together with Professionals and opinion Leaders from Mt. Elgon Region led by Prof. Changeywo. Kibabii University expressed its request for allocation of fifty (50) acres of land with possibilities for expansion to enable it set up a University Campus which will eventuality develop to a full-fledged University. Members present were excited to have a University in the region and after much consultation and deliberations they unanimously agreed to allocate Kibabii University 50 acres of Divisional Headquarters land at Kopsiro.

The desire to establish a Campus in Mt. Elgon is informed by the fact that Mt. Elgon has been marginalized since independence and hence the presence of a University would contribute to and spur development in the area. The University will help grow the much needed trained and skilled human resource through its academic programmes and at the same time carry out mutually beneficial collaborative research with the local community in a number of areas including; agriculture, traditional medicine, bio-resource conservation among others for the benefit of the local community, County Government, University and the Country as a whole.  These programmes will offer immediate employment, business opportunities and access to essential services for the local community.

Hotuba Ya Makamu Mkuu Wa Chuo Kikuu Wakati Wa Ufunguzi Wa Tamasha La Juma La Uelekezi Wa Ajira Na Utamaduni Kwenye Ukumbi Cha Tarehe 12 Jumatano Februari 2020

Hotuba Ya Makamu Mkuu Wa Chuo Kikuu Wakati Wa Ufunguzi Wa Tamasha La Juma La Uelekezi Wa Ajira Na Utamaduni Kwenye Ukumbi Che Tarehe 12 Jumatano Februari 2020

Hotuba Ya Makamu Mkuu Wa Chuo Kikuu Wakati Wa Ufunguzi Wa Tamasha La Juma La Uelekezi Wa Ajira Na Utamaduni Kwenye Ukumbi Che Tarehe 12 Jumatano Februari 2020

The workshop was attended by management, faculty, staff and students of Kibabii University. In his four-hour talk, Professor Ayiro gave a detailed account on the need for the curriculum review stressing that the CBC curriculum puts more emphasis on the mind and body;

“To succeed in the 21st Century, we must go back to basics” Prof. Ayiro emphasizes.

According to him, to position Kenya in a global economy, CBC was a game changer as world opportunities in this Century looked at learners with application capabilities than mere academic certificates.

“Jobs in developed nations keep getting leaner and leaner with emphasis on research and development, creative design, constant learning, skill building and demand a high sense of team work. On the other hand, jobs in less developed nations lay emphasis on mass production, occasional learning and low interest in skill building,”

He challenged learners to concentrate on shaping character in their areas of learning and in private lives.

“Character is judged by what you do when no is supervising. For example, someone who does not spread his bed shall never become anything in this world!”

With regard to higher education, Professor Ayiro challenged the Universities to prioritize introduction of core subjects that lay emphasis in character and competence; reading and language, mathematics, civic literacy, health and wellness, business and entrepreneurship, environmental awareness among others.

He observed that Kibabii University was already gearing up to new developments to cut a niche in emerging trends and had started winning grants to drive it.

“We are setting up a multi-million ICT hub that will see us play in the big league on innovations and competence-based learning” Prof. Ipara noted.

Freshmen

Ladies and gentlemen

As we assemble here to celebrate this auspicious day, it is with privilege and great pleasure that I welcome you all to Kibabii University, a premier University that is committed to scholarly excellence in an environment boasting of state of the art infrastructure set out in a serene landscape. In the last few days you have had an opportunity to walk around and can therefore attest to this.

Congratulations !

Let me start by congratulating you for the hard work whose outcome was the quality grades which earned you a place in the University. It should be stated with emphasis that this was achieved in an increasingly competitive academic environment.

I am aware that you have been going through an elaborate induction program. The purpose is to prepare you adequately to cope with this new life. The life of academia that involves serious intellectual rigor.  What you become however will depend on how seriously you take the content you have been exposed to during this last one week.

New chapter in life

Your arrival at Kibabii University marks a new chapter in the story of your life. But this chapter is different. The preceding chapters were largely written by different persons; your parents, guardians, families and teachers amongst others. Now you will not only be the principal author of the next chapter but will also become its critic. You have the opportunity to determine the direction of the motif, theme, style and plot of your story.

At Kibabii University you will have the opportunity to learn new things, acquire new knowledge, grow new competencies, develop new skills and enhance your personal attributes in profound ways that will shape your character for the rest of your life.

You will also have an opportunity to weave new friendship that will impact your lives in incredible ways both in the University for the next four years and for as long as you will live on this planet.

All these are predicated upon your commitment to navigate the tricky terrain. As is the case with suspense packed literary book chapters, you need to learn, and very fast, how to dodge the many conflicts and distractions in your path. The distractions unfold in diverse ways. I will mention a few.
Vice Chancellor’s Speech Presented during the Orientation for Freshers on 17th September, 2019

Distractions to avoid

A university student is the most coveted. The politicians consider you a treasured trophy to be used for their selfish ends. Religious groups look at you as a disciple anointed to help propagate their doctrines, sometimes destructive. On the other hand, entrepreneurs will find you a prized cog in marketing their products. And don’t forget radicalization elements who will entice you to carry out evil activities in the name of untold rewards in heaven. Then the flamboyant ‘sponsors’ out there will make you think you are the most beautiful piece of art that God ever created. All have one hidden agenda, to misuse and eventually dump you.

The world around us is not safe anymore. It is teeming with moral decay manifested through negative social practices such as homosexuality, romantic relationships, wild parties, binge drinking, substance abuse and killings among others.  You must be cautious of those who have abrogated themselves the role of opinion leaders, yet they have failed to complete their studies. You must also stand up against bullies who are set to derail you.

I now wish to focus on the following important things that will ensure you leave Kibabii University a successful and useful person.
Vice Chancellor’s Speech Presented during the Orientation for Freshers on 17th September, 2019

Focus on what brought you here

Set eyes on your goal. This goal is to go through the whole university education process and at the end earn a degree. It requires that you take responsibility for your learning. Every second, minute and event is a learning experience. Take advantage of both human and material resources readily available in the form of faculty, staff and infrastructure to expand your intellectual capacity.

 Brand yourself

Choose what you want to be and start branding yourself now. Your brand should be reflected in your mannerisms, gait and grooming. For example, at the university, there is no prescribed dress code for students but I urge you to be guided by the tenets of modesty and decency and carry yourself with decorum. Master the soft skills such us the art of communication, collaboration and problem solving. If need be use digital platforms positively to brand and market yourself.

Be a good manager of your time

Learning at the university is less structured unlike the high school. There is a lot of freedom where you choose to attend or to miss lectures, you also have the freedom to walk out of a lecture hall. One can through choice either build their future or destroy it. However, all these choices have consequences. Make the right decision.

If you attend classes, do assignments, sit for continuous assessment tests and examinations, obey the governing rules and regulations, you will be sure of walking out of Kibabii a worthy person. Do the right thing at the right time. Stay in the straight and narrow path. Keep on the right lane and side of the road and you will be safe. Remember once a minute has gone it will not be rewound. Never forget that Maisha si tamthilia wala riwaya. This means life is not a rehearsal.
Vice Chancellor’s Speech Presented during the Orientation for Freshers on 17th September, 2019

Exploit your other talents

Kibabii University are the reigning champions in Taekwondo. After the All Africa Games competition two of the team members have been selected for Tokyo Olympic trials. They have also excelled in Music and Drama. Recently they participated in the Presidential Digital talent as well as Robotics competition. The Robotics team too have been offered one week of training in Nagasaki, Japan. This was possible because your predecessors were involved in extra-curricular activities but of course without compromising their academics.

At Kibabii University, a world of endless opportunities will unfold before your very own eyes. You can be somebody you want to be and you can choose to be anything that you want. All you need to do is to work hard and work smart. An extract from an email I received recently from an alumnus is testimony. It reads: “ Hello Prof. I hope this finds you well. My name is Kennedy Barasa, former student leader at Kibabii   in the capacity of Editor-in-Chief. I am glad to inform you that, from the pieces of advice and wisdom you so generously shared, I was able to make something fairly good. I was lucky to get a Fulbright FLTA chance and am currently teaching Swahili to beginners at the University of Pittsburg. I am also privileged to study at least four courses and am glad I will get to know more about Journalism and Writing. I am sharing my culture here across American high schools as well, telling them more about East Africa but more importantly, Kenya. It is an exciting venture and I am grateful for your advice!”

Chart out your future career

The jobs of the future may not be known today. But I can assure you that you need more than lecture notes and reading list to prepare yourself for the future place of work. Sharpen your IT skills, enroll for professional courses, refine your character, grow network of contacts and tighten your resilience.
Vice Chancellor’s Speech Presented during the Orientation for Freshers on 17th September, 2019

Take care of your life

Life is precious, so take care. One of the most recommended strategies is moderation. Moderation will open more doors for you, help you manage day-to-day pressure and take you where brilliance and machoism cannot sustain you.

Always remember to have limits in your indulgence.  Like I have stated earlier, you are here for a specific purpose which you must always hold as the compass that directs every single step you make. Balance between social life and academics.  I urge you to lead responsible lives, carefully choose your friends as some may corrupt your morals,  avoid risky behavior and don’t succumb to peer pressure.

Although we are welcoming you into the world of young adults, your body, mind, and soul are still too fragile to cope with the exigencies of life. For example, while it is good to raise families, this coveted but challenging societal role should be done the right time. Similarly, marriage is the best thing in life but it does not mix well with studies.

As much as campus dating may seem to be in vogue, it is simply a waste of time and breaks many hearts. A number of those who came ahead of you have learnt these truths the hard way. More importantly, maintain your independence. God never creates dependents. Even total orphans have made it through university.

Financial management

Financial management is the most challenging. There can never be enough cash. Exercise outmost financial discipline. Please use every coin responsibly and diligently so that you will always have finances to meet your daily expenses. Draw a budget that prioritizes your needs to enable you lead a simple, dignified and manageable life at the University.
Vice Chancellor’s Speech Presented during the Orientation for Freshers on 17th September, 2019

Take yourself as a problem solver

United Nations General assembly will recognize two Kenyans this month on contribution to environment. These are Elizabeth Wanjiru and Francis Kamau. You too may register this kind of achievement. As possessor of huge reservoir of information, thanks to the digital era, direct your arsenal of big and bold ideas and innovations towards solving problems in the University, community and the country. So, it would be unfortunate to allow yourself to be taken hostage by the so called opinion leaders.

Embrace diversity

You have come from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds to pursue your ambitions and dreams as students. Some of you will be tempted to join herds of those from your communities. This is retrogressive. Take advantage of this opportunity to extent you network of friends.  Mingle with colleagues from different parts of Kenya as we will demonstrate in a ritual that will be performed at the end of my speech  and you will see the positive outcome:  cross pollination of new knowledge and ideas that will  enrich your lives. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to KIBU, your new home. Your home until November, 2023. Thank you and God bless you.

A Tribute to Prof. Barasa Cleophas Charles Wangila

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF A HERO

We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of our Hero. Even though we are of different ages and professions, it is certain that we all have one thing in common: our admiration for a man who never quit until the job got done. That man, of course is Prof. Barasa Cleophas Charles Wangila. But fondly and simply referred to as B.C.C. Wangila.

Prof. Wangila was the founding Vice Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology an institution that has incredibly grown to world class level thanks to his unique leadership style. He was also an aquaculturalist of international repute. As Vice Chancellor, he was very instrumental in the establishment of the then Kibabii University College.

Kibabii University remained a dream for many decades until eight years ago. Many of us knew we needed to do something but it was Prof. Wangila who ensured that this University was established in Bungoma County. He saw an opportunity where many saw problems. Since inception, Prof. Wangila contributed immensely towards its growth and ensured that the fledging University overcame the numerous challenges including outright opposition that culminated in long drawn and bitter court battles.
A Tribute to Prof. Barasa Cleophas Charles Wangila
He equally played a key role in ensuring that the structures and systems were in place. Worth mentioning was his role in the recruitment of the University College Management and Staff. He has mentored many scholars and professionals including staff who are now professionals to reckon with in their own disciplines in the service of Kibabii University.

Prof. Wangila was passionate about students and alumni working very closely with them and always going for the voice of reason rather than confrontation. He lent a helping hand to the students leading to the employment of the best pioneer alumni by the University.

Despite the exigencies and responsibilities of his office as a Vice Chancellor, his zeal for education was evident in his desire to get it right the very first time by creating time for classroom interaction with young scholars especially in the area of genetics.

On behalf of the University Council, University Management Board, Senate, Faculty, Staff and Students and the entire Kibabii University fraternity and on my own behalf, I wish to appreciate the efforts of a man of action not just words for rallying together many people to realize the Kibabii University dream.

Prof. Wangila was indeed a Hero in leadership, academics and Social life.

Fare thee well Prof. B.C.C. Wangila!!

A Tribute to Dr. Jared Peter Oloo Odhiambo

We have all gathered here to mourn someone who means many different good things to each person in the gathering. He has answered the call to join those who have gone ahead of us.

The Ibo saying captures this inevitable fact appropriately in a proverb which says: Every piece of iron is destined for the smithy. In Arabic this is stated as:  Inna lilahi wainna ilayni rajiun. In English it simply means: From God we have come and to him we shall return.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends. We are all hurting over the loss. But the family feels more pain. This is because it is not easy to withstand the loss of a person of this stature. The cost of training an individual to this level is huge. In return their contribution is immeasurable. Dr. Oloo has passed on at a young and formative stage in his life and career yet he had already made great contribution. The value of his full potential had he lived on cannot be estimated.

A Tribute to Dr. Jared Peter Oloo Odhiambo

I wish to share some of his virtues.

Dr. Jared Peter Odhiambo Oloo was an outstanding man.

He was first and foremost a   teacher and lecture of great skill and understanding. A number of his students are serving this great nation in different capacities.

Until he departed, he was Chairman, Department of Science, Technology and Engineering. He did a superb job during his stint as academic and administrative head where he provided excellent mentorship for young faculty and students. His unique style of inclusiveness and impartiality in running the department was exemplary.

He was a scholar of repute. His Intellectual and professional rigour can be seen in his publications and was manifested in his coherent reasoning. He had cut a niche in the field of Theoretical Physics where he concentrated in the area of Superconductivity. His research ventured in areas that had direct practical value to society.  A case in point is his research topic for Masters degree which explored “Effects of varied Magnetic intensifies and exposure time on germination of Rosecoco beans.” He disseminated his ideas through publications and professional bodies. Up to his final day, he was Member of Kenya Physical Society and Kenya Society of Electric and Electronic Engineering

At a personal level, this was a versatile large hearted gentleman who communicated fluently in four languages. This was a brilliant man with strong opinions but also straight forward.

Dr. Oloo was a person with caring temperament; Very lively, lovable, likeable and supportive.

His fellow Auditors at the University remember him for his fun and funny witty remarks. In his CV he boasts of being a very good time keeper, a man of his word and actions.

This was a valuable member of KIBU. So our hearts are saddened by the loss.

Though he may be dead, his kindness, humility and ideas will never be forgotten.

Fellow mourners, here lies great man. Let us emulate him so that when we die, history, humanity, and by extension God will be kind to us.

Fare thee well comrade Dr. Jared Peter Oloo Odhiambo, PhD.

Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo,

VICE CHANCELLOR

Prof. Siamba Donates an EKOSCAN Machine for Research and Training on Somatic Cell Count

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ipara Odeo received donation of an EKOSCAN Machine for Research and Training on Somatic Cell Count from Prof. Siamba on Wednesday 26th September, 2018.

The Somatic Cell Count (SCC) is a main indicator of milk quality. Cell counts tend to reflect a response to infections of the udder commonly referred to as mastitis. In a normal lactating animal-human being included, small number of cells of epithelial cells andwhite blood cellsare shed from inside of the udder.  Essentially, a lower SCC indicates better animal health, as somatic cells originate only from inside the animal’s udder. SCC monitoring is important because as the number of somatic cells increases, milk yield is likely to fall, primarily due to the damage to milk-producing tissue in the udder caused by mastitis pathogens and the toxins they produce, particularly when epithelial cells are lost.

Direct or reference (arbitration) method of somatic cells count in milk is a microscopic method which involves the counting of the stained somatic cells using a microscope. It is a very time- and labour-consuming method which also requires highly qualified personnel. It is because of the complexity and laboriousness of the microscopic method, that indirect methods of somatic cells count have been developed. These include:

    1. -Viscosimetric method;
    2. -Conductance-measuring method;
    3. -Optofluoroelectronic method/ fluorescence flow cytometry method

The EKOSCAN is an indirect action devise based on viscosimetric method (viscosimetric somatic cells analyzers) and it measures the viscosity of milk. Tested milk sample is mixed up with a special chemical preparation (Mastoprim) which destroys somatic cells’ membranes (leukocytes), resulting in DNA molecules which come in a solution, increasing its viscosity.

The higher somatic cells number in a tested milk sample the more viscous (thick and stringy) is the mixture. Viscosimetric somatic cell analyzer measures/ determines the time of outflow of the tested sample through a special capillary with a known diameter and displays the results in accordance with the calibration chart that reflects the compliance of the outflow time with the somatic cells number.

The macine can also be calibrated into aBactoscanto indicate the level of bacterial contamination from external sources, such as insufficient cleaning of the milking equipment or poor udder and teat preparation prior to milking, and can indicate a high level of environmental pathogens.

Orientation Speech Delivered to Freshmen 2017/2018 by Vice Chancellor

We are gathered here for a very important activity. One that marks the end of your orientation programme and has ut-most significance to you today and in your entire life. The freshmen who give this function the seriousness it deserves have never gone wrong. Thank you for your presence.

My remarks today are based on the fact that university students find themselves in trouble because they know so little about themselves.

In the last two weeks, Kenya had a chance to show case one of its most important resource, the human resource in the form of its sons and daughters who won elective positions as Governors, Senators, Women Representatives, Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies. Even Kibabii had four of its former and current students on the list of elected and nominated MCAs.Readmore
