Biography

Prof. Julius Kiprop Maiyo is a Professor of Economics of Education and Planning in the Department of Educational Planning and Management, School of Education, Kibabii University. He holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Education from University of Pune, an M.Phil. in Economics and Planning of Education from Moi University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Education Arts (Mathematics and Economics) from Moi University. He is a member of the Kenya Quality Assurance Network, the East Africa Quality Assurance Network, and the Kenya Institute of Management.

Currently, Prof. Maiyo serves as the substantive Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation at Kibabii University. Previously, he served as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics and Student Affairs) for one year and three months and also as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation.

Prof. Maiyo has over ten (10) years of experience in senior management and administrative positions at Kibabii University and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. Some of the key leadership positions he has held include Dean, School of Education (2021–2025); Director of Performance Contracting and Quality Assurance (2014–2021); Faculty Examination and Timetable Coordinator (2006–2009); and Departmental Coordinator for Seminars, Workshops, and Conferences (2006–2013).

Beyond these management roles, Prof. Maiyo has served as Chair of the University Strategic Plan Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Committee; Chair of the Performance Contracting and Quality Assurance Board; Chair of the Career Growth Development and Human Resource Manual Implementation Committee; Chair of the Part-Time Management Committee; and member of the University Curriculum Development and Review Committee.

Prof. Maiyo is also actively involved in several national, regional, and international committees. Recently, he was appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Education as a member of the task force established to set up the Open University of Kenya. He serves as a Pension Trustee and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Kibabii University Pension Scheme. Since 2013, he has been a Peer Reviewer and Auditor for the Commission for University Education (CUE), participating in university accreditation processes, programme evaluations, and quality assurance audits across Kenyan universities.

Additionally, he has served as Secretary General of the East Africa Quality Assurance Network and has participated in numerous quality assurance forums organized by the Inter-University Council for East Africa and the East Africa Quality Assurance Network.

Alongside his management responsibilities, Prof. Maiyo has extensive experience in teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision, as demonstrated by the number of postgraduate students he has supervised to completion and his numerous publications in reputable journals, books, and book chapters.

He has successfully attracted substantial research funding to the University through competitive grant writing and consultancy engagements. Prof. Maiyo has supervised 25 Master’s students and 18 PhD students to completion. He has also served as an External Examiner for Moi University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, MIT ADT University, University of Dar es Salaam, and Laikipia University, and as a Peer Reviewer for the Inter-University Council for East Africa.

Furthermore, Prof. Maiyo has established numerous partnerships and institutional linkages at national, regional, and global levels. These collaborations have enabled Kibabii University to engage in joint postgraduate supervision, collaborative research, short-term exchange programmes, and broader internationalization initiatives.
