Biography
John Wanjala Makokha is an accomplished academic, researcher, and institutional leader with over thirteen years of experience in theoretical and applied nuclear and environmental physics. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Physics in the Department of Science, Technology, and Engineering at Kibabii University, where he plays a central role in advancing teaching, research, and academic program development. Prof. Makokha’s research focuses on addressing pressing environmental and climate challenges through innovative, interdisciplinary approaches, integrating machine learning, remote sensing, and atmospheric physics to reduce radiation exposure risks and mitigate the impacts of anthropogenic climate change. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of aerosol dynamics, radiative forcing, and air quality over East Africa, with broader implications for climate modeling and environmental sustainability, and is currently advancing the application of hyperspectral imaging and artificial intelligence in biodiversity conservation, demonstrating the transformative potential of physics-based approaches in ecological monitoring and natural resource management. A strong advocate for sustainable development, he promotes renewable energy solutions and climate-smart technologies aimed at improving livelihoods, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, and has successfully secured and managed six competitive research grants through collaborations with national and international partners. Prof. Makokha has an extensive publication record, with over seventy peer-reviewed articles in reputable scientific journals, alongside contributions to books and book chapters, and actively disseminates his work at national and international conferences, contributing to global scientific discourse in environmental and atmospheric physics. He earned his PhD in Environmental Physics from the University of Nairobi in 2016 and has demonstrated strong academic leadership, having served as Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Student Affairs) in 2024 and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance and Development) in 2026 at Kibabii University, where he continues to contribute to institutional development, research excellence, and mentorship.
