Welcome to Kibabii University’s directorate of Open Distance and Electronic Learning. To meet the ever-growing demand for higher education, Kibabii University through the Directorate of Open Distance and electronic Learning (ODEL), has embraced innovative ways to provide flexible access to quality education through the integration blended learning approaches in the delivery of its programmes. The directorate works closely with academic schools and faculties and enjoys the support of competent lecturers from the schools and faculties. Also, the directorate has competent staff who offer technical support to both lecturers and students who embrace blended courses.

To provide flexible and innovative approaches to learning through utilization of technology and provision of effective learner support.

The objectives of the Directorate are:

  1. To liaise with Senate and CUE accreditation of existing Undergraduate and Post graduate programmes of Kibabii University to ODEL platform
  2. To coordinate development of new ODEL programmes
  3. To mobilize resources to support running of the ODEL programmes
  4. Train staff on course preparation, use of ICT in offering courses on ODEL platform
  5. To co-ordinate learning activities
  6. To market to the general public programmes on ODEL platform

Kibabii University Hosts Virtual Workshop on Technology-Enabled Learning

Technology Enabled Learning (TEL) policy development workshop was sponsored by Commonwealth of Learning (COL). This was in honour of an agreement signed between Commonwealth of Learning and Kibabii University. Kibabii University was privileged to be among the three Universities in Kenya which are supported by COL. 47 participants from Kibabii University were invited to attend and participate in the workshop including members of management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Sanjaya Mishra, an education specialist: eLearning and Ms. Barbara Khavugwi from Commonwealth of Learning. The Workshop was held online via Zoom.  The Workshop was scheduled from 9.00 a.m. – 11.00a.m. from Monday 24th August, 2020 to Friday 28th August, 2020. The Objective of the Workshop was to come up with a draft Policy on Technology-Enabled Learning (TEL) for Kibabii University.

Directorate of Open Distance & E – Learning 2019/2020 Financial Year Performance Contact Self Evaluation Exercise

Directorate of Open Distance & E – Learning 2019/2020 Financial Year Performance Contact Self Evaluation ExerciseIn August 2019 the Ministry of Education and the Inspectorate of State Corporations negotiated and vetted Kibabii University’s performance contract for the financial year 2019/2020. The contract was cascaded and implemented within the required stipulated framework. The self-evaluation process was carried out from Tuesday 25th August, 2020 to Friday 28th August, 2020, Directorate of Open Distance & E – Learning was evaluated. Kibabii University has successfully implemented the PC of FY 2019/2020 despite the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Training on E-Learning Course Management

The Directorate of Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODeL) headed by Dr. Alice Nambiro, organized a one day training to all CoDs on basic skill of managing online teaching and learning which was held on 22nd April2020 in Computer Lab ABC 212. The training involved Designing Self-Directed Online Courses and Assessments on Kibabii University E-learning platform and Using Video Conferencing facilities in Open and Distance learning. This training was essential to enable lecturers engage their students on their respective courses using E-learning during COVID-19 quarantine period.

Open Distance and E-Learning Director, Dr. Alice Nambiro attended a workshop on Policy Development for Technology-Enabled Learning at Kaimosi Friends University College on 25th and 26th November 2019. Workshop was facilitated by Dr. Sanjaya Mishra from Commonwealth of Learning.

Training on Digital Content Development for E-learning Platform

The Directorate of Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODeL) headed by Dr. Alice Nambiro, organized a three-day staff workshop themed “Instructional Design, Digital Content Development, Delivery and Management ” for School of Business and Economics (SOBE) staff and board members held on 6th – 8th November, 2019 at Kamadep Guest House, Kakamega. The training covered Designing Instructional materials for various learning Strategies, Proper utilization of Learning Management System for effective course management, and finally integrating various learning resources using Authoring tool.

Open Distance and Electronic Learning Directorate of Kibabii University vision is to provide flexible and innovative approaches to learning through utilization of technology and provision of effective learner support. We plan to facilitate delivery of Certificates, Diploma, Degree, Masters and PhD programs to our learners in various parts of the Country, East Africa Region and beyond.

Directorate of Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL) conducted a one-day training on Digital Content Design for e-learning platform. The training was towards enhancing an interaction online learning material that covers well course content and learners needs. Dr. E. Masibo, COD Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Technology presented teaching strategies and methodologies while Dr. Peters Anselimo, Chairman Department of Information Technology discussed standard instructional design strategies. DVC (ASA), Prof. Solomon Shibairo made opening and closing remarks during the training.

Digital Content Development Workshop

Directorate of Open Distance and E-Learning (ODEL) in conjunction with School of Computing and Informatics (SCAI) held a six day digital content development workshop at Hotel Joventure in Kisumu on 21st April to 26th April, 2019. Representatives from different Schools and Faculties were trained on Instructional Design, Digital Content Development, Delivery and Management. Participants were awarded certificates on completion. The workshop was officially opened by the Vice chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo.
