Kibabii University on Friday, 10th July 2026, hosted a Teachers’ Professional Development and Mentorship Programme. The programme brought together teachers from primary and secondary schools across Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, and Siaya counties alongside mentors from Kibabii University and Kibabii Diploma Teachers Training College. It was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, and attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Partnerships, Research and Innovation), Prof. Julius Maiyo, Bungoma South Sub-County Quality Assurance Officer Mr. Joseph Omela, Bungoma County TSC Director Ms. Jane Nyakoe, and members of the University’s research team.
Launched in May 2021 as a pilot research project, the mentorship programme funded by Global Partnership for Education Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) and International Development and Research Centre (IDRC) to a tune of CA$ 1,200,000.00 seeks to strengthen teachers’ professional competencies through structured mentorship and collaborative learning. During the forum, participating schools showcased best practices based on the nine elements of effective teaching, including learner-centred instruction, ICT integration, inclusive education, project-based learning, life skills education, and the use of locally available teaching resources. Teachers reported improved classroom practices while highlighting challenges such as limited ICT facilities, inadequate digital skills, learner absenteeism, and low teacher motivation.
In his keynote address, the Vice Chancellor underscored the University’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education through research, innovation, and community engagement. He noted that partnerships between universities and schools play a critical role in improving teaching and learning outcomes.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Bungoma South Sub-County Quality Assurance Officer Mr. Joseph Omela reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and nurturing learners’ competencies through initiatives such as science and engineering fairs, KJSEA, music festivals, entrepreneurship, and mental health programmes.
Bungoma County TSC Director Ms. Jane Nyakoe commended teachers for embracing innovative teaching approaches and encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained to enhance classroom practice. She also applauded Kibabii University for championing teacher professional development.
Closing the programme, Prof. Julius Maiyo who is also the Principal Investigator in the project lauded the participating schools for their presentations and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening school partnerships through research, mentorship, and innovation. He announced that outstanding schools will be invited to showcase their innovations during Kibabii University’s Innovation Week in 2027.
