Aga Khan Academy Mombasa Partners with Kibabii University in Teacher Mentorship Program

A team of education experts from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, led by Dr. Bernard Dudi, Director of Teaching and Planning, alongside Dr. Orwe and Mr. Maina Kioko, visited Kibabii University on 28th October, 2025 under the Aga Khan Academy Teachers’ Support Mentorship Program. The visit aimed to recruit First Class Honours graduate teachers from the University to join the mentorship initiative.

The event was presided over by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Joshua Ogendo, representing the Vice Chancellor. In his remarks, Prof. Ogendo lauded the Aga Khan Academy for partnering with Kibabii University and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to excellence in teacher education and professional development.

The delegation explained that the Teachers’ Support Mentorship Program, run through the Professional Development Centre (PDC) at Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, focuses on strengthening the teaching profession through interactive pedagogies, inclusive learning environments, and collaborative professional growth.

Established in 2003, the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa was the first institution in the global network of Aga Khan Academies. It offers a full continuum of International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes and hosts a dynamic teacher development centre. Among its flagship initiatives is the Professional Teacher Collaboration Project, which equips teachers with modern pedagogical approaches, fostering engaging learning experiences and values-based education.

The mentorship program’s recruitment process is highly competitive, involving multiple stages of interviews and presentations to evaluate confidence, communication, and critical thinking skills. This year, 12 candidates from Kibabii University advanced to the next stage, with only 18 finalists expected to be selected nationwide. The Aga Khan team commended Kibabii University for consistently producing exceptional candidates, noting that the previous cohort earned three of the 18 national slots.
